Judith Shahn

Judith Shahn, a Designated Linklater teacher since 1991, taught voice, speech, dialects and Shakespeare in the graduate actor training program at The University of Washington for 26 years. She “retired” in 2016 and is teaching Linklater Voice and Shakespeare workshops in Seattle and most recently, Mexico.

Judith has spent most of her life in the theatre or devoted to theatre education. She trained as an actor all through her youth and then received a BFA from Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama. “Pounding the pavement” as a young actor in New York City, Judith grew weary of waiting tables and moved to Seattle where doors began to open. She began acting, teaching, coaching professional theatre and it’s here she met Kristin Linklater, who gave her a path and passion for the rest of her life. While becoming a Designated Linklater teacher, Judith was hired at the University of Washington’s School of Drama. She began teaching voice to non-actors: lawyers, businesspeople and all professions who had a need for further self-expression. Her consulting business is called Vibrant Speaking.

Since retirement, Judith has focused on her business and acting: in an all-female Coriolanus and in My Antonia at Book-It Repertory Theatre; continuing as a voice/dialect coach for professional theatre: Seattle Repertory Theatre, A Contemporary Theatre, the Fifth Avenue Theatre, Intiman Theatre; teaching abroad in Mexico and Brazil. Judith has also had the honor of assisting and co-teaching side by side with Kristin at the Kristin Linklater Voice Centre. She hoped there would be many more years of assisting Kristin.

Judith also teaches people to sing and lead songs. Her CD, SING TOGETHER, is available through her website.

The most profound thing about the Linklater Voice work for Judy is witnessing people change, when they are determined to do so.
