The voice that sings and the voice that speaks have the same anatomy. Kristin Linklater's exercises free the voice from habitual tensions and constraints, and singers benefit from her work as much as speakers (actors). Two of Kristin’s Designated Linklater Teachers join us for this workshop which will focus specifically on the singer's needs. Both have developed exercises and strategies for singers based on the Linklater Voice methodology.
This workshop offers singers access to freedom, ease and release in their performance. We will explore range, resonance, articulation, the opportunity to move easily from singing to speaking to singing with a focus on personal creative expression. All genres of singing and levels of experience are welcome. The workshop begins with exercises designed to awaken a sensory and imagistic relationship with voice. The progression of exercises leads from physical awareness (locating tension and releasing it), to awareness of natural breathing, the experience of sound in the body, the release of tension in the throat, jaw, tongue and soft palate, the development of resonating power in the chest, the mouth and the face, the accompanying development of breathing power, the exploration of range throughout two to three octaves of speaking notes and, finally, to articulation.
Both of the teachers have extensive experience in applying Linklater Voice Method to the art of singing. Deborah Garvey teaches singing at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and is a voice and speech tutor on the BA Acting Voice team at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Michael Petermann conducts choirs, teaches voice to singers and is the Director of the Conservatory of Music in Hamburg.
Faculty Bio
Michael Petermann is a Conductor, Voice trainer for Singing and Acting and a Designated Linklater Teacher since 2003. He is the director of the Hamburg Conservatoire and Artistic Director of The Audience's Orchestra of Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg. Michael was a longtime assistant to Kristin Linklater, and interpreted for her in Germany, including the rigorous Teacher Training workshops. He was the German Co-translator of Freeing the Natural Voice, revised and expanded (Meisterwerk Stimme, Reinhardt Verlag, München) and published in 2019.
Deborah Garvey, (Deb) Deb is a voice, singing and dialect coach. She joined the BA Acting voice team at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2019. Previously, she was a faculty member for six years at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama IRCSSD) as Lecturer in Voice on the MA/MFA Voice Studies programme. She continues to work there as a visiting lecturer on both the Voice Studies; BA Acting (Collaborative and Devised Theatre) and the MA Music Theatre programmes. She also has a private voice coaching practice.
She trained and worked as an actor and singer before returning to study to complete a music degree, proceeding then to graduate with an MA in Voice Studies at RCSSD. This reawakened her love of text and language and extended her understanding of voice. It also provided a springboard for her to teach both spoken and sung voice and the areas in between - an area of ongoing practice inquiry. Linklater Voice work has further enriched this process, and it underpins all aspects of her coaching. Deb is a composer with a particular interest in writing music for the stage. She is a member of Equity, British Voice Association and VASTA.
